Make sure you don’t run out of stamina too soon and start taking damage-this is why you’ll want to park your ship close to the edge of the Leviathan with the ladder point towards you.ĭespite it’s hard-to-find nature, Chitin isn’t used for that many items, and to be completely honest, they really aren’t that useful when you start to progress in the game.
You’ll need a Pickaxe to mine the Chitin, and after mining a few nodes, the Leviathan will start to flee, sinking into the water. Once you’ve found one, approach it-be sure to place your boat so that the ladder is facing the Leviathan-and then hop aboard. Many Leviathans can easily be spotted because they look like small circular islands, and the Abyssal Barnacles that you farm are very easy to spot as you get closer. While Leviathans do have a small tree or two on them, they usually stand out easily compared to other pieces of land you'll come across. Once you’ve made a Karve, head out into the Ocean and look for any islands that appear more arched and rocky.

We recommend running with a Karve, because it’s the cheapest ship to build outside of the raft and is pretty quick when sailing at full speed around the various waterways in Valheim. Chitin can be mined from the barnacles on the back of Leviathans.Ĭoming across Leviathans can be tough, which means you’re going to need to grab some supplies and go exploring. This is because this special material can only be mined from nodes called Abyssal Barnacles, which are found on the backs of Leviathans-massive living, moving islands that are found in the Ocean biome.

When gathered, it can be used to craft a few special items. Using chitin you can craft the Abyssal weapons at any level 2 Workbench.Chitin is a somewhat rare material that players can find in Valheim. Leviathans are giant sea turtles that will start to sink underwater once you start mining them, so it can be rather difficult to collect enough chitin to craft these weapons.
The harpoon is a unique weapon that tethers you to other enemies or players after you throw it at them, so it can be used for relocating creatures such as a boar into a pen or even for dragging Sea Serpents to land to strand them and make their Serpent scales recoverable (since they normally sink in deep water). To maximize your gains, try to start mining at the same time. Also, it’s best to mine the turtles with a group of people, as you can get more chitin quickly. If/when the giant tortoise goes under, head back to your boat before it’s too late. You should know that every time you mine some chitin, there is a 25% chance that the turtle will sink. Take your boat up to it, but leave the ladder facing the turtle because you want to be able to easily access your boat, especially if the turtle decides to go for refreshing dive. You can find them floating about in the vast ocean, and once you find one, you should make a note on your map so you can easily return to it in the future. That means the next step is to find one of the giant sea turtles. Sounds easy, but there’s a catch: to get the chitin, you’ll need to harvest it from the back of an ancient sea turtle. You’ll also need fine wood and leather scraps aside from the chitin. To craft Abyssal weapons, you are going to need chitin…a lot of chitin.
